Why file both a review and an appeal?

Most counties give you two separate ways to ask for a lower value:

  • A review by the county Assessor (in Los Angeles, form RP-87). It's free, but the Assessor may not answer before the appeal deadline.
  • An appeal to the Assessment Appeals Board (in Los Angeles, form AAB-100). Most counties charge a filing fee for it (Los Angeles: $46). The appeal keeps your right to a hearing if the Assessor hasn't answered by the appeal deadline or doesn't lower your value enough.

Filing both covers you either way. If the Assessor lowers your value first, you can withdraw the appeal.

After you confirm your county, you'll see its own forms and deadlines.
